That stale, faintly sour smell can linger even after you think you’ve cleaned the stain. If you’ve been trying to eliminate dog urine odor in carpet, the issue is often the cleaner, not your effort. Standard all-purpose sprays can lift the surface stain, but they leave behind uric acid crystals—the real source of the smell. Enzymatic cleaners are made to break down those crystals, and with a little time you can get your carpet truly fresh.

What You’ll Need

  • An enzymatic pet-urine cleaner (about $10–25)
  • Paper towels or old white cloths
  • A fan or open window
  • A black light (optional, for locating old spots)

How to Eliminate Dog Urine Odor in Carpet

  1. Blot up fresh urine first. If the accident just happened, place paper towels or an old cloth over the wet area and press down with a plate or your hand. Leave it there for 15 to 30 seconds, switch to dry towels, and repeat until the carpet is only slightly damp. Don’t rub. Scrubbing spreads the urine and can push it down into the padding.
  2. Find all affected spots. In low light, a black light can make old urine stains glow faintly. Check under furniture, along baseboards, and near doorways. If there are multiple spots, treat them all; otherwise, the smell might return even after one area smells clean.
  3. Apply the enzyme cleaner generously. Hold the nozzle close and apply enough to dampen the carpet fibers down to the backing—not just the surface. Older accidents often need a heavier application. Include an extra 2 to 3 inches around the stain, because urine can spread sideways under the surface.
  4. Allow the cleaner to work. This is the step most people rush. Enzymes need moisture and time to break down the odor. Follow the label and wait the recommended dwell time, usually 10 to 15 minutes. For old, stubborn spots, enough moisture and time make all the difference.
  5. Blot up the excess and dry slowly. After the enzyme cleaner has sat, press clean towels onto the area to absorb any pooled liquid. Then leave the spot alone with a fan or open window moving air across it. Keep pets and people off until it is completely dry—sometimes 12 to 24 hours. The enzymes keep working as the carpet dries.
  6. Treat again if needed. If the smell fades but doesn’t disappear, apply another round of enzyme cleaner. A second treatment is often enough for a spot that has been there for weeks. If the urine soaked through the carpet pad to the floor below, it may be time to call a professional.

⚠️ Note: Keep steam cleaners and very hot water away until the odor is gone. Heat can set the smell into the carpet fibers and padding, making it much harder to remove.

Eliminating dog urine odor really comes down to using the right product and giving it time to do its job. Soak the area with an enzyme cleaner, let it dry fully, and repeat if necessary. Your carpet—and your nose—will thank you.
