If your foundation brush is leaving streaks instead of a smooth finish, it’s likely not the formula — it’s leftover makeup, oil, and dead skin trapped in the bristles. Knowing how to wash cosmetic brushes is one of the easiest ways to improve how your makeup looks and keep your skin from breaking out. Makeup artists generally recommend washing brushes used with liquid or cream products once a week; powder brushes can go two to four weeks.

What You’ll Need

  • Gentle brush cleanser or baby shampoo
  • Lukewarm water
  • Small bowl or clean sink
  • Clean towel or paper towel
  • Silicone grip pad or textured mat (optional)
  • Olive oil (optional, for heavy buildup)

The Simple Washing Routine

  1. Wet the bristles only. Hold the brush downward and run lukewarm water over the hairs. Do not let water hit the metal ferrule or the wooden handle; moisture can loosen the glue over time.
  2. Swirl in cleanser. Put a drop of cleanser into your palm or on a silicone pad. Swirl the bristles in firm, small circles for about 20 seconds. If your brush is stained from thick foundation, mix a drop of olive oil into the cleanser to help break up the makeup.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Keep the brush pointed downward and run lukewarm water through the hairs. Gently press the bristles with your thumb to release any leftover suds.
  4. Repeat if needed. For brushes used daily or on very pigmented products, one round may not be enough. Swirl and rinse again until the water runs completely clear from the bristles.
  5. Press out the water. Lay the brush on a clean towel and press gently. Do not pull or squeeze hard, since the shape can distort.
  6. Dry flat or over an edge. Lay the brush on a towel with the bristles hanging slightly over the edge of the counter. This keeps water from dripping back toward the ferrule and helps the hairs keep their shape. Avoid standing brushes upright in a jar to dry — water can settle near the handle.

💡 Note: Don’t soak cosmetic brushes in a cup overnight. A long soak is the most common reason the wooden handle cracks and bristles fall out. Five minutes of contact with cleanser and water is plenty.

That’s the whole routine. Clean brushes feel softer, apply color more evenly, and give your skin far fewer chances to react. Pick one day each week to wash the brushes you rely on most, and your makeup will look like it took more effort than it actually did.
